CHENNAI: Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) sleuths intercepted five persons and seized heroin worth Rs 10 crore from them at Central Railway Station on Friday.The five, arrested on Saturday, included the mastermind, a man of Sri Lankan origin, as well as two women carriers. Officials said that the seizure of trafficked heroin worth Rs 10 crore from the carriers was among the largest of this drug in the State in recent times.DRI officials said that they received information that four persons from Madhya Pradesh were smuggling close to 6 kg of heroin by train from Bhopal to be handed over to a Sri Lankan man in Chennai. Based on this information, the police began their investigation.Officials said they subsequently intercepted four passengers - Rameshwar, Badrilal, Unnibai and Rekha - who arrived at Chennai Central by Tamilnadu Express on Friday. Examining their luggage, officials found that each bag had a false bottom in which about 1.6 kg of heroin was found concealed in a polythene bag. The total weight of the heroin in the four bags were about 6.6 kg. Based on inputs given by the carriers, the DRI sleuths identified and intercepted the kingpin, who was of Sri Lankan origin and had come to receive the consignment. He was arrested while he was waiting outside the station in his car. In related searches, materials used for packing the drugs for onward movement, the car used by the Sri Lankan and cash of Rs 4.30 lakh was seized, officials said. All five persons were remanded to judicial custody.
