KOCHI: In an attempt to boost tourism in the city, Ernakulam district will host a week-long tourism celebration programme in December this year. The announcement was made by Mayor Tony Chemmany at the inauguration of the World Tourism Day celebrations held at DH Hall grounds in the city. Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the  city witnessed a number of celebrations in keeping with the United Nations World Tourism Organisation’s theme for the year, ‘Tourism Linking Cultures’. District PI Shiekh Pareed presided over the occasion. The day began with the public art exhibition at DH Grounds. The installations done by Abhilash Unni and Finnish Artist Anna-Lea Kopperi which will be on till September 29 is an attempt to link ‘Indian and European cultures’ through art. On the last day, 500 herbal saplings will be distributed to children and others Grounds. In association with the various tourism clubs of schools, the DTPC organised functions like tableau and painting competitions. The winners of the painting competitions, quiz competitions and others attended the finals at the Kerala Institute of Tourism and Travel Studies (KITTS).  Three Chilean artists, Martin John C,  Claudia Claija and Valeria Olgin, conducted a theatre workshop at the grounds for the children from the tourism clubs. The workshop will continue till the 29th. Registration will is open till  28th. There were also musical performances. A photo exhibition with the photographs of 256 artists from across the world was held at Fort Kochi. Four ‘Heritage Walking Tours’ were also  conducted covering Fort Kochi and Mattanchery.
