New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has proposed to hold class X and XII board exams on same dates, although on different time slots, which will allow teachers more time to correct papers.
The new plan was designed after the board met principals of some of the top schools in National Capital Region. The two panel CBSE committees, which suggest ways to improve the system, will now review the plan.
The board, which has around 1800 affiliations, usually holds exams from the beginning of March, barring this year due to state Assembly elections. The exams last 45 days due to the number of subjects and separate time-tables for the two classes.
Because of this, teachers get very little time to correct the papers before the results are declared in May.
The plan is devised to decrease the overall duration of the finals. At present, exams are not held in the afternoon.
The reduced number of exam days will give evaluators a pool of schoolteachers selected by the CBSE more time to check the answer-scripts of students before the results are declared in May.
The teachers usually get a small window to check the answers, given the sheer size of the number of examinees.
“Conducting class X and XII exam on same day is a suggestion that emerged during a meeting with Principals of CBSE-affiliated schools. By conducting Class XII and X exams on the same day, we can reduce the examination period and provide more time to the evaluators,” a senior board official told CNN-News18.
It has also been suggested that the board should ask students to suggest teachers who could be good evaluators. Another suggestion is to increase the remuneration of evaluators, at least by 20%, and to set a figure as to how many copies they need to check.
CBSE came under severe criticism this year due to errors in correction after it was reported that those who sent their papers for revaluation saw up to a 400 percent rise in their marks.
