BANGALORE: To hasten up the process of allotting works related to 11 Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) that were sanctioned as a part of Cauvery Drinking Water Project IV Stage II Phase, which is being undertaken with funds from Japan Bank, Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is planning to send a report to Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to initiate the process of opening the bids. BWSSB Chairman P B Ramamurthy said, “Unless we allot the works at the earliest, it will be impossible to complete the STPs along with the II Phase project as planned. Therefore, we have decided to send a proposal to the JICA for approval, after placing the issue in the next board meeting. These STPs should be completed at the earliest to ensure that all the sewage that is generated in the city is treated in accordance with the Supreme Court’s guidelines, as more sewage would be generated in the state after the completion of the II Phase drinking water project.”According to the projections, at least 1,200 MLD of sewage would be generated in the city, after the Cauvery II Phase is commissioned and the BWSSB has a capacity to treat around 720 MLD of sewage in fourteen STPs that are located in various places in the city. Therefore, the BWSSB had proposed to install 11 STPs with a combined capacity to treat an additional 400 MLD of sewage, at various places along the course of four sewage valleys - Vrishabavathi, Hebbal, Koramangala and Challaghatta Valley’s to treat the additional sewage. It may be recalled that BWSSB was also planning to supply the treated sewage for industrial and washing purposes after the eleven STPs are commissioned. According to the Supreme Court’s guidelines the sewage that is generated in the cities should be treated before releasing it for customers. The water is mainly used for everyday household chores.
