The police said Venkatesan, son of painter Sundar and a Class VIII student in a private school at Brindavan Nagar in Velachery, had gone to pluck some flowers for Ganesh Chaturthi poojas. Later, while taking bath in the lake, he got stuck in slush. He did not know swimming.Venkatesan’s mother Bobby said he left home telling her that he was going out to play with his friends. “He went at 3 pm and did not return even after 5 pm. He went to the lake along with his friends. They knew that my son had drowned. But they did not inform me. They lied to me when I asked about him. They said he had gone out with some other friends. But when cops questioned the boys, they told the truth. My son does not even know how to reach the lake. His friends had taken him there. We saw the clothes that he had left on the banks of the lake,” Bobby said.Venkatesan is the second person to drown in the Adambakkam lake within the past one week. On August 26, auto driver Ramachandran (35) of Ekattuthangal had slipped and drowned while fishing there.Residents in the locality alleged that the drowning incidents were recurring as there was no fencing around the lake. “The lake is not cleaned on a regular basis. Also, it is not fenced. This resulted in the drowning of five to six persons in the area,” said a resident.
