BHUBANESWAR: As northern India froze under the impact of a Western Disturbance (WD), mercury plummeted to new lows across the State which is in grip of a severe cold wave.Interior parts of Kandhamal district recorded sub-zero temperature while mild snowfalls were witnessed in interior pockets.The weather office has no good news to offer for the next few days.The India Meteorological Department predicted another WD which would send the mercury further down in the northern India. In Odisha, the severe cold wave conditions is likely to prevail for another 48 hours, it said.The biting cold conditions kept people largely indoors during the evening hours. At Kandhamal’s Daringibadi, the night temperature fell to minus 3 degree Celsius whereas Belghar and Baliguda recorded minus 2 and 1 respectively. The district headquarters town recorded 2.8 degree C. Reports from the district said many parts received snow-flakes during the morning hours while normal life was affected due to the bitter cold conditions.It was not Kandhamal alone which felt the cold bite. In Sambalpur, Sundargarh, Titilagarh, Keonjhar, Balangir and Baripada, night temperature hovered around five degree Celsius. In coastal plains, the night temperature fell appreciably below normal. Bhubaneswar recorded the minimum temperature at 10.2 degree Celsius, season’s lowest, on Saturday.Only twice in last ten years __ in 2003 and 2011 __ that the City recorded lower temperature. The Met office record showed that night temperature in the Capital was at least five degree below normal whereas the maximum day temperature was three degree less than the normal.The pattern was similar across the districts. In Gopalpur, the night temperature was six degree below normal while in Balasore, it was five degree less than normal. The fall in Jharsuguda, Sundargarh were even lower.
