Bollywood vs South: Dhanush or Ranbir?
Two of the Indian film industry's brightest stars have emerged in 2011.

New Delhi: With the phenomenal popularity of Tamil actor Dhanush's 'Kolaveri Di' and the critical acclaim of Ranbir Kapoor's Sadda Haq song from his film Rockstar, two of the Indian film industry's brightest stars have emerged in 2011 with the promise of memorable performances in future.

Despite their age difference of just a year, both actors are upcoming superstars and have made a name in two of the world’s most competitive film industries in the last decade. Known for their fluid acting styles, these stars have not just inherited a legacy but the expectations that come with being born into a thespian family.

Ranbir is one of the youngest members of the illustrious Kapoor family, considered by many as one the first family of Indian cinema since the days of actor Prithviraj Kapoor.

Five generations since Prithviraj Kapoor have played their parts in Indian cinema. Dhanush is the son and the brother of directors Kasthuri Raja and Selvaraghavan. He married megastar Rajinikanth's daughter Aishwarya, cementing further his position in the Tamil film industry.

Winner of the National Award in 2011 for his performance in 'Aadukalam', Dhanush started his career in 2001 and debuted under the direction of his father Kasthuri Raja in 'Thulluvadho Ilamai'.

Considered two of the most promising talents of this time, both Dhanush and Ranbir have had to earn their place in the unforgiving industry and struggled through initial setbacks. When Ranbir debuted in 2007 with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Saawariya', everyone in the film world was talking about the son of Neetu Singh and Rishi Kapoor, veteran actors themselves.

The role won him a Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. But his breakthrough was Ayan Mukerji's 'Wake Up Sid' which gained both critical and commercial success in the box office.

In 2011, Dhanush scored hits with Audukalam, Venghai, Mapillai and Mayakkam Enna. His recent film Mayakkam Enna gained positive reviews and was declared a hit at the box office.

Similarly, Ranbir's Rockstar gained the elusive approval of critics. His portrayal of dimwit Janardhan Jakhar aspiring to emulate his idol Jim Morrison in the film was not just inspired acting but it also indicated the effort the young actor has put into improving his acting style. Critics agreed that he is a natural actor.

Dhanush is also a lyricist and a playback singer. His forthcoming film is ‘3’ directed by his wife Aishwarya Rajnikanth with Shruti Hassan paired opposite him.

'3' particularly gained high popularity prior to the release, after the single track 'Why This Kolaveri Di', penned and sung by Dhanush. The song went viral on internet and gained overwhelming response.

With more directors willing to experiment with character roles, Ranbir is choosing his films carefully. His upcoming film is ‘Barfee’ directed by Anurag Kashyap, where he portrays the role of a deaf and mute person.

Audiences, both down South and in Bollywood, are eagerly awaiting Dhanush's '3' and Ranbir's 'Barfee'. Dhanush's 'Why this Kolaveri di?' has helped him reach out the section of Indian audiences beyond the Tamil film industry. Ranbir needs a little more extra effort to inch up with Dhanush.
