New Delhi: Visiting Bhutan King Singye Wangchuk met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi on Saturday, a day after both the countries signed an agreement on cooperation in hydroelectric generation and renewed a decade old pact on trade and commerce for another ten years.

Singh and the Bhutanese monarch discussed a host of issues during the meeting.

The king, accompanied by crown prince Dasho Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck, arrived in New Delhi earlier this week on a six-day visit.

India signed an agreement with Bhutan for the purchase of power from its 1020 MW Tala hydro-electric project, the largest bilateral cooperation project undertaken by India in the field of hydropower in a foreign country.

India and Bhutan also inked an agreement on Trade, Commerce and Transit, providing for continued fee trade arrangements between the two countries with simplified procedures, and additional facilities and routes for Bhutan's transit trade with other countries.

Relations between the two countries are on upswing since Bhutan staged a military operation in 2003 to turf out Indian separatist guerrilla groups based in the kingdom who were staging hit-and-run attacks on Indian targets.

King Wangchuck has announced plans to abdicate his powers to an elected Parliament and a new draft constitution was drawn up in 2005.
