Bangalore: Multi-level solutions for parking woes
The hustling Gandhi Bazaar, frequented by South Bangaloreans, will soon get a makeover.

BANGALORE: The hustling Gandhi Bazaar market, frequented by South Bangaloreans, especially during festivals, will soon get a makeover. The 58-year-old market is now bracing up for a multi-storeyed building, to accommodate shops and a parking lot. The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike is planning a brand new market complex on the existing market area. This, according to the BBMP officials, will address the burning problem of parking vehicles  in Gandhi Bazaar.

Being one of the oldest shopping areas in Bangalore, it is a one-stop shopping road for people from all economic classes. Though Gandhi Bazaar market exists, it has lost its sheen in recent times being unable to compete with the current mall trend.  The BBMP’s multi-purpose commercial complex will have an underground parking lot, ground and first floors for commercial establishments and five floors above, which will also be a  parking lot.

According to Munikrishna, chief engineer (Market), there will be 37 shops on the ground floor, and the first floor will be utilised by Palike as its Revenue division office. The proposed multi-purpose commercial complex and parking lot will be constructed at 1,469 square metre area. Estimated to cost `12.56 crore, the proposed plan has received state government’s approval.

Further, Munikrishna said that Bangalore-based Nandish Associates has prepared a Detailed Project Report (DPR) and has submitted the report to the Town Planning for sanction of the plan. “We are also waiting for the approval from BWSSB and Fire Departments. Once it is finalised, we will float tenders,” he said. The proposed multi-level vehicle parking which has spread over five floors can accommodate 128 cars and 200 two wheelers.
