CHENNAI: A 12-member medical team conducted autopsies on the five bank robbery suspects gunned down in the police encounter, at the Government General Hospital on Saturday. Police said a four-member team conducted the autopsy on each body that began around 9 am and went on till the evening. Doctors from other government hospitals in Chennai were called in to perform the autopsies as the GGH has only five doctors who perform this procedure.The five bank robbery accused were earlier identified by police as Binod Kumar, Chandrika Ray, Vinay Prasad, Abhay Kumar and Harish Kumar from Bihar and West Bengal. The XIV judicial magistrate, Egmore, Geetha Rani was present and the entire post mortem was photographed and videographed, police said.Binod Kumar was identified by his parents as Sujay Kumar Ray alias Binod Kumar, at the mortuary. Police sources said Sujay Kumar’s father Muneshwar Ray, his sister Anita Rani and two other relatives came to the hospital and identified Sujay’s body and later gave a statement to the magistrate, which was recorded.Sujay’s family earlier met the city police commissioner on Friday night after police sent out information on the gunned down bank robbery suspects in the police encounter to other states in an attempt to get their real identity and their history, police sources said.Sujay’s body was sent along to a private hospital in Porur for embalming after which his relatives planned to send his body to Patna in an evening flight. However, his body was sent back to the GGH mortuary and the evening flight ticket was cancelled as police sources said that they required to get a certificate from the village administrative officer. Another version of the story has it that the embalming had taken time and the body could not be taken to the airport on time, sources said. Police said that his body would be flown to Patna on Sunday.The mortal remains of the other four suspected robbers were kept at the mortuary in GGH. Hospital sources said that the post mortem report would be made and submitted to the judicial magistrate in three days. Police said that the encounter case had been transferred to the CB-CID, which will conduct an investigation based on the suggestions of the judicial magistrate. Naxal link not yet confirmed According to police sources, the Chennai city police had sought information from the ‘Q’ Branch on the probable link the five bank suspects had with naxals. Police sources said that the ‘Q’ Branch would gather information on the history – including naxal and terror links – of persons from other states involved in offences in Tamil Nadu, upon request from police. Q Branch sources said they had also sought the help of the Intelligence Bureau and the Anti-Naxal Squad in Bihar. They were still awaiting replies from them.CB-CID called to verify encounterThe autopsy report has to be submitted to the DGP in 15 days since the National Human Rights Commission has sought information on the encounter, sources said. The DGP’s order has been sent to Chennai City Police Commissioner JK Tripathy and CB-CID ADGP Narindra Pal Singh on Saturday. Five bank robbery suspects, were gunned down in a police encounter in their rented house at Third Lane, TNHB Colony, Velachery, during the wee hours of Thursday. Police found a bag containing cash of `14 lakh, three pistols and two revolvers in the house. Geetha Rani, XIV Judicial Magistrate, Egmore began a judicial probe on the day of the encounter.
