PUDUCHERRY: Amidst a sudden spurt of criminal activities, including murders, extortion bids and violent incidents, Chief Minister N Rangasamy, on Thursday, convened a meeting of the top officials and “reviewed the law and order situation” of all the four regions of the Union Territory.According to sources, the chief minister advised police officials to “make all efforts to maintain law and order so that the people would feel confident.”He urged them to take stern action against rowdies as well as strengthen their intelligence gathering. Give protection to members of the public who inform the police about the anti-social activities in an area, the chief minister added.Police officials briefed the CM about the specific cases of murders and explained the action taken on those incidents.Rangasamy told the police officers that “certain people” were making efforts to gain political mileage out of the incidents by projecting it in the public. He asked the officers to spare no efforts to tackle the rowdy menace and to ensure that peace was maintained. However, the chief minister was silent on the Goondas Act which the opposition parties alleged was being kept in ‘cold storage’ by the AINRC government after assuming office.DIG I D Shukla, Atul Katiyar, SSP (Law and order) V J Chandran, SP N T Sivadasan, Deivasigamani, A Nandagopal and inspectors of police took part in the meeting, held at the commercial taxes office building. The meeting lasted for about one hour. This meeting comes at a time when the stabbing of a spare parts shop owner evoked strong protests from the traders and opposition political parties. In an earlier incident, a Vellore jail inmate threatened a bar owner and his followers ransacked the bar. This was followed by attack by accomplices of a notorious rowdy, now in jail, on a rival gang in Kurusukuppam, which caused panic in the area.
