CHENNAI: At the upcoming trade fair, students from the Government College of Fine Arts will showcase their artistic skills through the Tamil Nadu Police stall. Through paintings and black and white sketches, they will depict the history of the Chennai Police Department. The sketches will also include the various police stations that operate from heritage buildings in the city. Some of the old buildings that the students have chosen include the Ice House, Triplicane, Chintadripet and Royapuram police stations. Police personnel said that the idea behind these paintings was to get the history of the department in the city across to the current police officials and at the same time, to make it interesting for the visiting children.“We have given the students a few layouts and colour drawings on various awareness-related information such as the dangers involved in talking on cell phones while driving. The commissioner has asked us to do more paintings for the exhibition and also spoke on clay modelling,” said Kamala Kannan, a representative of the Government College of Fine Arts.Apart from the paintings, photographs of former Commissioners of Police would also be put up, sources added. To keep the exhibition interactive, do’s and don’ts related to various issues and frauds dealt with by the Central Crime Branch, awareness on child abuse and the history of the department would also be included as part of the stall. “We will also have different uniforms worn by policemen since Independence on display,” said a police official. There will also be a computer quiz on traffic rules and road safety, apart from weekend performances by police bands, dog squads, display of ceremonial dresses of the cops and the mounted police, police sources said. Children below the age of 12 can try their hand at the air gun in the stall. “There will also be a policeman toy that will have a speaker set in it, connected to a mike with a policeman sitting behind the screen. When kids talk to the toy, they will think that the toy is replying. This is our way of helping kids overcome their fear of policemen.” Police sources said that despite the fact that police in the districts were not showing interest in the stall, there would be eye-catching and informative exhibits arranged by other divisions in the department. While the Crime Branch CID would display fake currencies, Narcotics would have samples of various drugs, information on de-addiction centres and early detection of addicts and ganja plants. Displays would also include police telecommunication technology with new and old equipment used by police officials. The Forensic Division would have data on DNA, super imposition and finger prints and police training info would be put up by the Tamil Nadu Police Academy. The Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board will have inspiring information on how an aspiring young policeman can follow his dreams.
