With less than 24 hours to go, the traditional artisans here are working overtime to meet the demands for the “Vinayagar” idols, to be worshipped during the Vinayaka Chathurthi on Wednesday.
A family of artisans from Vanur in Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu was spotted at the verandah of a century-old house at Vysial Street on Monday. The grown-ups of the family, headed by B Dayalan, were making the idols of various sizes.
“We are traditional artisans and our family had been engaged in making idols,” Dayalan said when Express caught up with him. Most of his family members, Siva, Varadaraj and Sankar had been busy with Vinayagar idol making, which would continue through Monday night.
He said the idols were made out of clay, taken from a lake in Arumbathapuram. These clay idols were being sold at Kosakadai market.
The idols would be priced at Rs 15 and Rs 200 depending on the size. The idols were sold directly without middle men, Dayalan added.
When asked about the exact number of idols that would be sold, he said it could not be specified as many people would be selling similar idols in the market. However, he added that there would be sufficient idols to meet the demand.
Dayalan said his whole family, including the women, would be engaged in making the ‘Kolu Bommai’, immediately after Vinayaka Chathurthi was over.
His family members would be creating cinema sets for film production when the festive season is over, said Dayalan, a “moulder” of the South India Cine and TV Workers Union.
