KOCHI: Surveys reveal that 13 per cent of the total population is affected with learning disorders, mainly reading, writing or calculation problems. Usually such children are expected to be individually attended to by special educators in normal mainstream schools. There is always a confusion between pure learning disorder and scholastic backwardness or poor school performance. The difference is that learning disorder is mostly linked with brain development, while scholastic backwardness could be due to factors such as family problems, lack of interest, laziness etc, which can be corrected more easily.
