New Delhi: Andhra Pradesh police on Tuesday categorically denied any involvement of the state in the fake encounter killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh.
“If they have done anything illegal it is their responsibility. There is no official confirmation from the Gujarat government giving any information about involvement of police from Andhra, “Basit said.
Earlier, sources told CNN-IBN that Hyderabad police helped accused Gujarat IPS officer Vanjhara in killing Sohrabuddin.
The startling revelation confirmed that Andhra police were not just in the know of the encounter plan, they were directly involved in assisting their Gujarat counterparts with logistical and intelligence inputs.
Rajkumar Pandian - another IPS officer arrested in the case - stayed at the Police Officers' Mess in Hyderabad in November 2005.
Sohrabuddin was killed on the 25th of the same month.
Sources said Hyderabad police helped the Gujarat police with logistical support when Sohrabuddin and his wife Kausar Bi were picked up.
This was confirmed by Head Constable Gurudayal Singh Jat during the Gujarat CID probe.
In another development, the Punjab government has initiated an inquiry after it was found that three militants, reportedly killed in encounters years ago, are actually alive. It seems the police had killed three innocent civilians in their place.
The Gujarat fake encounter case has opened up a Pandora's box, with many states realising that many past encounters could have actually been staged by the police.
