Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday announced that the Anna Arch at Arumbakkam, one of the landmarks of Chennai city, would not be removed for constructing a flyover and the location of the flyover would be shifted slightly so that the Arch would not be disturbed.
“The Anna Arch, constructed to mark the platinum jubilee of former Chief Minister C N Annadurai and unveiled by former Chief Minister M G Ramachandran on January 1, 1986, remains strong and sturdy akin to the glory of MGR in the hearts of the people. I have directed the authorities to continue the works on the flyover without disturbing the Anna Arch,” the Chief Minister said in a statement after chairing a high-level meeting at the Secretariat.
She said the previous DMK regime had, in 2010, approved construction of a flyover connecting Third Avenue of Anna Nagar and Nelson Manickam Road, at a cost of Rs 117 crore, to ease traffic congestion on EVR High Road in Arumbakkam. During the meeting, she was told that steps were underway to remove the Anna Arch to continue the work on building the flyover. The CM said she has directed the officials not to remove the Anna Arch after holding detailed discussions on the issue.
Despite efforts since September 2, the two arches remained rooted to the spot. The arches were built in 1985 and then CM M G Ramachandran had unveiled it on January 1, 1986.
