Farmers from the state of Andhra Pradesh have come up with an interesting business plan, to cover the losses incurred due to farming. According to Local18, the business idea involves the plantation of mangoes, which is proving to be very profitable.
Karimidi Ammiraju, a resident of the Gopalapuram village, located in the West Godavari district, is selling various varieties of mango saplings from his nursery, in the market. He told Local18 that the seeds were planted during his childhood, were well taken care of and grew to become extremely profitable to the family. The farmer stated, “We will buy a small piece of land for Rs 50 each for the nursery. After they were increased, the sales of Rs 200 to Rs 400 will continue.”
The mango fruit carries a history of 4000 years. It is popularly used in food items like pickles, juices and mango tandra (mango jelly). Local 18 says that the fruit is being cultivated on around 13 lakh acres of land, which was bought in two Telugu-speaking states. Each year, it produces over 25 to 30 lakh tonnes of mangoes. According to Ammiraju, certain practices can be followed to get a better yield as well as quality of the fruit.
In the district of West Godavari, mangoes are being cultivated in big quantities. Farmers are buying the saplings from his nursery and planting them in the mango orchards. Ammiraju has a good variety of mango saplings available, stated Local18. These are taken care of by four labourers and are sprayed with grass.
The varieties of saplings sold in the nursery include Maru, Banginapalli, Neelam, Chandura, Sugar Katti, Antu Mango, Parrot Nose Mango, Bangalore Mango, Nuziveedu Rasam, Sugar Kalash, Suvarnarekha and more. Karimidi Ammiraju added, “We have brought a five-foot variety of plants and preserved it till it reaches about 12 feet and exported them to the farmers.”
