THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Vishnu Pankaj is busy making an electronic choke. Diodes, capacitors and resistors line up before him for their turn to be made use of. Meanwhile, he should also give due importance to making an infrared sensor, inverter and emergency lamp at the same time.      For this Plus-Two student of St Mary’s Higher Secondary School, Pattom, ten electronic equipments have to be completed at the on-the-spot competition before the bell rings. Along with Vishnu were several others who were showcasing their prowess in the North Sub-district Educational Work Experience Fair at the Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, Pettah. Ranging from crafty handworks and electronic goods to yummy food items, the  exhibition turned a stage for students to exhibit manifold talents. Students from as many as 90 schools in the North Education Sub-district paraded their artistic and intellectual talents.  The exhibition also displayed several works where students have tried their hands at utilising waste materials and scrap. Coconut shells, old newspapers, wooden flakes and screw pine leaves - all got fresh lease of life in the form of dolls, wall hangers, garlands and baskets. For making materials out of bamboo and palm leaves, the teachers too had to engage in the laborious task of finding suitable raw materials. Says Genebiere D’Silva, teacher with a private LP school at Shanghumugham, “other than training students in making all these items, many of us even went in search of palm leaves and finally one among us fetched it from the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, a place rich in palm groves.” While one corner provided a rich visual treat, appetizing odour of mouth-watering dishes filled the air from the other. But never imagine that they were mere lip-smacking stuff. The ‘chefs’ were trying their hands at making healthy food so that one wouldn’t burn a hole in their pockets. Girls ruled the roost in making food items in the ‘Economic nutrition food’ and ‘Food preservation’ categories. While Varna V Nair of St Mary’s Pattom was making noon meals with two ‘payasams’ and side dishes for a healthy diet, Arya S S of Govt GHSS, Peroorkada, was busy preparing 20 variety dishes. Next to them were Soumya S and Jaseena R, who were trying their hands in making pickle, jam and squash. Clay modelling, fabric painting, metal carvings, thread work and models made of plaster of Paris too found a place in the fair. The fair was inaugurated by Mayor K Chandrika on Thursday.
