PUDUCHERRY: NR Congress workers on Thursday clashed in front of Chief Minister N Rangasamy after the bhoomipuja function to mark the laying of roads and side drains near Bhajanamadthu Street in Ellapillaichavady. Ranagasamy, Puducherry Slum Clearance Board’s P Karthikeyan and top officials were present at the bhoomipuja for the laying of roads from Ellapillaichavady to Vivekananda Nagar via Thanthai Periyar Nagar. The 825m road was to be constructed at a cost of `54.7 lakh.Just when Rangasamy was about to get into his car, a local leader Soundar told him that the people of the area voted for his party but the area lacked many basic civic amenities. Soundar also told him that he tried to meet the CM in his office to raise the issue but was thwarted by some people.The Chief Minister told him that many from the public met him every day and nobody was denied an audience. Rangasamy asked, “who had stopped him from meeting me” and started towards his official vehicle.Soundar again came in the way of CM and tried to tell him something. Just then another local party leader Sugumaran questioned Soundar and slapped him while CM was watching.The followers of Soundar then beat up Sugumaran even as CM was leaving. The officials and others prevented any further attack on Sugumaran, who then reached the party office just a few yards away.The followers of Soundar gathered and tried to attack Sugumaran again, but police personnel, led by sub inspector Iniyan intervened and managed to pacify the crowd who then disbursed.
