BANGALORE: Various studies have reported significantly high prevalence of stress related disorders like hypertension, diabetes and coronary heart disease among policemen.Demanding job hours, erratic lifestyles and a high pressure job are some of the reasons attributed to the growing concern for health among the men and women who protect the city round the clock.In an attempt to address this concern, Columbia Asia Hospital joined hands with Bangalore City Police Department to conduct a free Diabetes screening programme for the city’s police personnel.More than 150 police personnel including administrative staff underwent screening at the police commissioner’s office for the inaugural phase.This will be followed by Columbia Asia doctors visiting various police stations in the city to better understand their work environment and to conduct the screening in a manner convenient to the personnel.Speaking at the occasion, Dr Nandakumar Jairam, chairman and group medical director, Columbia Asia Hospitals, expressed, “Due to the high on-the-job stress levels, police personnel are vulnerable to stress-related illnesses such as diabetes.Screening camps such as this would help them to detect, combat and take necessary precautions against such diseases.” “One day during my visit to a hospital I saw a policeman who was rendered blind due to Diabetes.The impact of Diabetes is serious and concerns every citizen and we policemen are not any different who go through lot of stress in their regular workplace,” said additional commissioner of police, Nisar Ahmed On this occasion, Columbia Asia Hospital also announced the launch of their Comprehensive Diabetes Management Programme ‘Life Unlimited — Diabetes Prevention and Management’ for the public, which is dedicated to providing end to end solutions for all diabetic and pre-diabetic patients.The programme is being conducted in phases, and the first phase will target North Bangalore to cover over 16 police stations in the next few weeks.The initiative will provide the police personnel with comprehensive screening, treatment and consultation by doctors.The team of doctors will visit each of the stations and conduct the programme while providing customised consultation to every individual.
