CHENNAI: Investing her vocal recital with effects of steadfast adherence to musical discipline, vocalist Subha Ga nesan, sang engagingly in her recent concert, organised by the Narada Gana Sabha. Her music was certainly relatable to classical music of appreciable genre. She had the keenness to maintain the clarity of Sahitya and Bhava, reinforcing her tutelage under ML Vasanthakumari and currently under TN Seshagopalan.Beginning with (Sakthi Ganapathim) in Raga Gowla of Muthaiah Bhagavathar with swaras of significant quality, she tried to bring out the Bhava of the kriti. She then hopped on to Marukelara in Raga Jayanthasri of Thyagaraja. Her effort to deploy the tonal modulation with clear diction was impressive, but the ‘melody’ aspect was given a go-by in her effort to strengthen the intonation of the lyrics. The Sudhdhadanyasi alapana, she took up next (Samodam Chinthayami) of Swati Thirunal, revealed her technical virtuosity and capability of enriching the music with swara prastharams. She handled the raga with competence but several phrases of the kriti that she rendered underscored the need to take care of layam aspects. The Raga essay of Keeravani (Kaligiyunte) and its plaintiveness touching the heart was rendered with charming phrases. On the whole, rendition of songs was competent, revealing the quality of padantharam, showcasing her desire to give a lively presentation, characterised by elaborateness in the treatment of alapana, niraval and kalpana swaras. A little more modulation of voice, stressing on laya aspects would have had a greater impact on the audience.Ananthakrishnan (violin) did a fine job, while Kallidaikurichi Sivakumar’s (mridangam) support was soft and competent.
