RAMANATHAPURAM: A rejuvenation camp for elephants? That is what pachyderms from 45 temples from across the State are all set to enjoy at Theppakadu soon. A 48-day elephant camp, to be organised near Mudumalai from December 14, will not only give them a vacation from daily rituals, but also make them coolheaded and happy. The AIADMK government had introduced the rejuvenation camp for temple elephants during its previous tenure. As part of the plan, temple elephants were transported to Theppakadu. Veterinary doctors monitored their health daily and gave them proper medical treatment. The camp gave ample opportunity to the elephants to reconnect with the nature, away from the cacophony of temple activity and crowds. Rajamanickam, Joint Commissioner for the Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple, has been deputed as the special advisor for the present camp. Two elephants — Bhavani and Ramalakshmi — from the Rameswaram temple will attend the camp. A team of veterinary doctors and Venkatraman, personnel clerk to the temple joint commissioner, will accompany the elephants. Assistant Director of the Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple Devasthanam, Mayilvahanan, is making all arrangements in this regard.
