Mumbai: Mumbai Police have arrested three people with five kg of suspected radioactive material in Panvel, Navi Mumbai in what could have serious security implications.

The seized material was sent to Bhabha Atomic Research Centre for testing. The analysis done by Central Region (Exploration and Research) Regional Director Mrinal Roy confirmed the material as depleted uranium.

"Mrinal Roy, regional director, Atomic Mineral Directorate for Exploration and Research, Nagpur, has filed a complaint under Section 24 (1) A of Atomic Energy Act 1962. The case has been registered at Panvel police station. Three people have been arrested. BARC officials are claiming that it is depleted Uranium which is not very harmful. This complaint was made yesterday (Monday)," said Navi Mumbai Deputy Commissioner of Police DT Shinde.

Navi Mumbai Commissioner of Police Gulabrao Pol said that all the three were arrested in Panvel and surrounding areas on Monday evening.

The incident comes just a day after police confirmed that two people were arrested for attempting to sneak out computer spare parts from the high-security Tarapur Atomic Power Station (TAPS-Units 2 and 3) in Mumbai early in November.

The two men, identified as Prashant More of Jena Engineering and Amit Shelke of Yash Tours and Travels, were both working on contract at TAPS and tried to steal computer power supply parts in their vehicle without a valid gate pass on November 1.

Personnel of the Central Industrial Security Force, in-charge of security, stopped the duo and apprehended them before summoning the Tarapur police.

Fifty five workers of the Kaiga Atomic Power Plant in Karnataka were found to have been affected by the contaminated water in a water cooler during their routine bio assay on November 24.

A check of the water cooler showed water had been contaminated with radioactive element Tritium.
