KOCHI: The Kochi Corporation will soon float the Expression of Interest (EoI)  for the construction of a new Solid Waste Treatment plant at Brahmapuram. The civic body has already identified three agencies, out of which, one will be entrusted with the preparation of the Expression of Interest (EoI). The new plant will be constructed on a Public Private participation (PPP)mode. The Corporation plans to utilise the funds under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) for its construction.“We have already identified three expert agencies that have an expertise in solid waste management. Among the three, one of the companies will be entrusted with the preparation of the EoI. The civic body will hold discussions with the selected agency about the clauses that have to be included in the EoI,” said Kochi Corporation Health Standing Committee chairman T K Ashraf. The decision to construct a new plant at Brahmapuram was taken by the Corporation after the existing plant got defunct in May. Due to technical snags, the civic body was unable to repair the plant and experts too were in favour of a new plant.Ashraf said that the Corporation would continue the sanitary land filling as a temporary solution to dispose the waste accumulated at the plant. “The Pollution Control Board (PCB) has also suggested sanitary land filling as a temporary measure to ensure that the waste does not get accumulated there. The PCB authorities have also recommended a mechanical compost plant at Brahmapuram,” he said.
