A Delhi Court on Tuesday denied bail to activist Umar Khalid in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots larger conspiracy case registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The former student leader had sought regular bail on the grounds of delay and parity with other accused persons.
Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai of Karkardooma Court dismissed Khalid’s second regular bail plea. The detailed order is awaited.
Earlier, a trial court in March 2022 dismissed his first plea.
Khalid had moved an application under Section 437 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) read with Section 43D (5) of UAPA in Karkardooma Court after withdrawing his plea seeking relief from the Supreme Court.
A former JNU scholar, Khalid has been in jail since September 2020, awaiting his trial under the UAPA for his alleged involvement in the larger conspiracy surrounding the communal violence that broke out in northeast Delhi.
Umar Khalid’s Counsel had argued that no terror case was made out against him and his name was repeated in the charge sheet of Delhi police.
It is alleged by the Delhi police that Umar Khalid had pre-planned protests in 2020 at 23 sites that culminated in riots.
