MADURAI: In a lurid incident, a 10-member-gang chased four murder accused and hacked them with deadly weapons in full public view resulting in two deaths here on Wednesday.Previous enmity between Chitrarasu, the former district secretary of Puthiya Tamizhagam, and Elanchelian, former state deputy general secretary of the PMK, is said to be the reason for the murder. The Chitrarasu gang had killed Elanchelian in July.In an act of revenge, a gang headed by Mari, brother of Elanchelian, chased down those who allegedly killed his brother when they were coming back in an auto after signing at the S S Colony Police Station. They were out on conditional bail in the murder case. Around 10 am, the police control room received a call about the movement of an armed gang in multi-utility vehicles. Before the police could act, the gang intercepted the auto near a medical shop at Villapuram. “The gang first attacked 25-year-old S Ambedkar of Avaniyapuram. We all saw him die,” said Kannan, an eyewitness.Unmindful of the crowd, the gang then hacked Arumugam (25) with a long knife. According to an eyewitness, Arumugam was seen running for cover though his hand was almost cut-off.The gang did not leave the other two either. One was assaulted near a temple and another near the roadside. Though the police rushed Mahakani (33) of Avaniyapuram to the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH), he succumbed to injuries. Two others — Arumugan and Kuti alias Karupuswamy (40) — are undergoing treatment at the GRH. Job done, the gang coolly walked through the main road carrying the blood stained weapons, said Ramesh, another eye-witness. “It was like a scene from a Tamil film. They all walked freely and got into the vehicle, parked a few meters away from the spot of assault. Just as in the film climax, the police reached the spot after the gang escaped,” he added. Many of those who stood witness to the event got the shock of their life. “After the incident, we immediately took the women of our household to our houses and advised them to take rest,” said many eyewitnesses.People said both the gangs — comprising men from the Schedule Castes and operating out of Periyar Nagar in Villapuram — have been nursing enmity for long, but they never disturbed the general public. It is the seventh murder in the gang war that began in 2003, a police officer said.(Names of eyewitnesses changed)
