VELLORE: Students of VIT are giving a final touch to the preparations to host the four-day annual sports and cultural carnival ‘Riviera 2012’ which begins on February 2. Over 4,000 students (in addition to 14,000 VIT students) from across the country are expected to converge at Vellore. This year, premier institutions such as IITs, NITs, BITS and Anna University have also evinced interest to send student for this mega event.It is an occasion for student participants to revive, rejuvenate and explore their talents, besides have a lot of fun said Vikas, one of the student organisers of the annual event. The festival gained international recognition last year when it entered the Guinness Book of World Records. Riviera has also obtained the coveted ISO certification, a first-of-its-kind feat to be achieved by any university in the coutry, he added.“What makes Riviera really special is that it has something for every participant,” said VIT Chancellor G Viswanathan while giving details about the event. This year’s edition of Riviera will have a total of 98 cultural events, 8 workshops and 22 sports events. A 5 km marathon ‘Fitness Rundown’ to promote healthy living marks the inauguration of the festival during which, former Indian cricketer Hemang Badani and the present Indian National Tennis coach Nandan Lal will participate as chief guests.This year, a 3D art workshop is organised in which Tracey Lee Stum, a Guinness record holder from the US will teach students how to make 3-dimensional pictures. Another event ‘Broadway’ aims to promote kids from local orphanages, who have been trained by the VIT students to perform on stage.Riviera is not just entertainment but an occasion to learn. Participants can learn new hobbies, take part in workshops that train Dj-ing, dance, pottery, clay modelling, photography, origami, chocolate cake making and cookie making. Literary buffs would have their own set of events such as movie script writing in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. There is a platform called ‘Style Check’ where budding style icons can flaunt their fashions. Also, multi-player gaming events are planned to keep gaming freaks fully engrossed.‘Pro-shows’ on every evening will bring a galaxy of celebrities — playback singers Shreya Ghoshal, Parnika, Aalaap Raju, Suchitra Krishnan, Rahul Nambiar, pop star Neeraj Shridhar, multi-lingual singer Natalie Di Luccio from Canada, melodic metal band ‘SuidAkra’ from Germany and DJ Marina from Russia will perform during the event.Tamil actors Srikanth and Arya, poet and lyricist Pa Vijay, Telugu actors Nikhil, Kamna Jethmalani and Bindu Madavi are the other celebrities who will entertain the audience during the carnival. With prizes worth `20 lakh to be won, Riviera, which is considered one of the biggest university fests in the country, is sure to promote a competitive spirit and the thirst to learn.
