Islamabad: Fifteen people were killed and nearly 30 others injured when a blast ripped through a military-run bakery in Nowshera cantonment in northwest Pakistan on Sunday, officials said.

The blast in the A-1 Bakery triggered a major fire that resulted in the explosion of several gas cylinders, officials told.

A spokesman for the Al-Khidmat Foundation, a rescue service, said 15 people were killed.

Nearly 30 injured people were taken to different hospitals in Nowshera, 40 km from Peshawar, the capital of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.

The nature of the blast could not immediately be ascertained.

Express 24/7 news channel reported the blast was caused by a suicide bomber though there was no official confirmation.

The bakery on Mall Road is run by the army and was crowded when the blast occurred at 0830 pm.

Several cars and nearby shops were damaged by the explosion and the subsequent fire.

Fire fighters and rescue workers extinguished the blaze.

This was the second blast in the northwest on Sunday.

Seven persons, including a woman and two children, were killed and 10 more injured when a bomb planted in a van exploded at Mattani on the outskirts of Peshawar this morning.

The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for that attack.
