How to Be a Karaoke Pro
Pick a shorter song. When choosing a song for karaoke, ask yourself, “Will this song keep the audience’s attention?” There’s nothing worse than being stuck on stage with a song that keeps going on and on! So, opt for a tune you know you can carry all the way through.
Choose a song for your voice. Even the best singers can sound off during karaoke if they pick a song that doesn’t match their vocal range. So, go with a tune that you don’t have to strain to sing. For instance, you may not want to try belting Wicked the Musical’s “Defying Gravity” outside of the shower unless you can hit those long high notes.
Know your audience. Think about who you’re singing to before you get on stage. Are family members or coworkers in the audience? Are you performing in front of a group of drunk strangers? Knowing who you’re performing for can help you pick an appropriate song and sing with more confidence. For example, you might not want to pick a super risque song if you’re singing at a work event. Alternatively, you may choose a breakup song if your no-good ex is in the audience.
Pick a song you identify with. When choosing your song, pick something you have a personal connection with. What can you sing from the heart? Believe it or not, this can add strength and passion to your performance. Say you’re going through a breakup. You might sing “Thank U, Next” by Ariana Grande or “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor.
Don’t be afraid to fail. While it may sound cliche, failure is inevitable—so embrace it! Not everyone rocks out right away, and that’s okay. If karaoke is something you love to do, keep going at it! The more you practice, the more you’ll improve and learn.
