Bing Chat vs. ChatGPT: Accuracy, Features, & Differences
Bing Chat vs. ChatGPT: Accuracy, Features, & Differences
As generative AI chatbots like ChatGPT increase in popularity, more companies are developing their own AI products. Microsoft's Bing Chat is an AI chatbot that's integrated into the Bing search engine, and many see it as a competitor to ChatGPT. While both ChatGPT and Bing Chat use similar language models created by OpenAI, each chatbot has unique strengths and weaknesses. So, which AI chatbot should you choose? This wikiHow article will explore the differences between ChatGPT and Bing Chat and help you decide which chatbot is right for you.
Things You Should Know
  • If you want to use GPT-4 for free, opt for Bing Chat. Otherwise, you'll need to pay for ChatGPT Plus.
  • ChatGPT is better at creating long-form content, such as writing longer programs, essays, and blog posts.
  • Bing Chat is better for research, especially for current events. It also provides sources for all of its responses.
  • You can ask ChatGPT an unlimited number of questions per day, while Bing Chat has a daily cap of 60.

Key Differences

Purpose. While both ChatGPT and Bing Chat are conversational chatbots, Bing Chat is deeply integrated into the Bing search engine. While you can use both ChatGPT and Bing Chat to write text and summarize information, Bing Chat's main focus is to help you get answers and find information. ChatGPT, on the other hand, is primarily a tool for generating content (including essays and code) and working with data. Think of Bing Chat as your partner in research, and ChatGPT as your assistant in content creation.

AI language models. Both ChatGPT and Bing Chat use versions of OpenAI's GPT language model. The free version of ChatGPT uses GPT-3.5, while Bing Chat relies on the latest GPT-4 model combined with its own model called Prometheus. ChatGPT Plus, the paid version of ChatGPT, does give you access to GPT-4, but the free version does not. If you want to explore what GPT-4 has to offer for free, Bing Chat is the way to go.

Price and limits. The basic features of both ChatGPT and Bing Chat are free, but ChatGPT also offers a paid Pro tier called ChatGPT Plus. ChatGPT Plus costs $20 per month and offers many benefits, including availability during high-traffic times, access to GPT-4, and plugins that bring added functionality to the chatbot. With the free version of ChatGPT, you get an unlimited amount of interactions with the chatbot per day. Both ChatGPT Plus and Bing Chat cap your daily interactions—ChatGPT Plus allows 25 interactions every 3 hours, while Bing Chat limits you to 60 prompts per day.

Accessibility. Both Bing Chat and ChatGPT are accessible on the web in most regions across the world. You can access ChatGPT in any web browser, but Bing Chat is only available in Microsoft Edge. You'll need an OpenAI account to use ChatGPT, and a Microsoft account to use Bing Chat. As for phone and tablet users, Bing Chat offers mobile apps for Android, iPhone, and iPad, while ChatGPT only has an iPhone app available.

Knowledge and Accuracy

Bing Chat is (usually) more accurate than ChatGPT. Bing Chat uses GPT-4, which is known for its human-level performance on academic and professional tests. While ChatGPT Plus is also based on GPT-4, its training data stops at 2021—this means that neither ChatGPT nor ChatGPT Plus is very reliable when it comes to current events. And because Bing Chat uses the Bing search engine, it's capable of finding the most up-to-date and accurate information. Still, ChatGPT does a pretty good job with accuracy, from creating usable code to performing complex math problems. In late May of 2023, Microsoft announced that Bing Search is coming to ChatGPT Plus. This will bring many of Bing Chat's perks to ChatGPT Plus users, including more current data. Eventually, Bing will also be integrated into the free version of ChatGPT through plugins. Even so, as long as the free version of ChatGPT relies on GPT-3.5, Bing Chat will still be the winner for accuracy. When it comes to coding, both AI chatbots can hold their own. However, many programmers note that while Bing Chat does well with debugging and explaining pieces of code, ChatGPT generates better programs from scratch.

Writing and Content Length

ChatGPT creates longer and more detailed text content. If you want to use an AI chatbot to structure essays, write blog posts, and create other long-form content, ChatGPT is the clear winner. Both ChatGPT and Bing Chat have a character limit of about 4000 characters, or 500 words, but Bing Chat often provides much shorter responses than ChatGPT. Additionally, ChatGPT (the free version) doesn't limit how many times per day you can interact with it, but Bing Chat has a daily cap of 60 chats per day. If you need an AI chatbot that can write content as often as you need it, ChatGPT is the chatbot for you.

Image Generation

Bing Chat has an AI image generator built in. Just ask Bing Chat to create an image based on your text input and watch the image appear. ChatGPT doesn't have image generation capabilities, though you can use OpenAI's DALL-E tool. Still, because DALL-E is separate from ChatGPT, Bing Chat is a better choice if your goal is to quickly create images based on your text instructions.

Research and Citations

Only Bing Chat can cite its sources, so it's better for research. If you want correct information that you can actually trace back to a legitimate source, choose Bing Chat over ChatGPT. Each time you ask Bing Chat a question, it performs a web query and formulates its answer based on what it finds. You'll be able to click the source links to verify Bing Chat's response. And because ChatGPT's training data cuts off at 2021, Bing Chat is better for researching the latest developments in science, medicine, and technology. Because ChatGPT will soon have Bing built in, it may catch up to Bing Chat in this area. For now, Bing Chat is the best option for researching and finding sources.

Conversational Tone

Bing Chat's GPT-4 integration makes it a better conversationalist. While ChatGPT produces grammatically correct sentences that are easy to read, its overall tone doesn't have much variation. Bing Chat has three conversational modes to choose from, allowing you to make the bot's responses More Creative, More Professional, or More Precise. Bing Chat's responses seem more casual and authentic, while ChatGPT always takes the same stuffy professional tone.

Plugins and Integrations

Only ChatGPT Plus offers plugins (for now). If you're a ChatGPT Plus subscriber, you can choose from over 80 third-party plugins that bring added functionality to ChatGPT. These plugins can do things like predict the weather, browse the web, search for and display images, help you with SEO, aid in trip planning, and even register domains. While Bing Chat does plan to bring plugins to its users, including Expedia, Klarna, and Redfin, that functionality is not yet available.
