Kolkata: Churchill Brothers struck two goals in each half before being reduced to 10 men for a convincing 2-1 win over United SC in a round eight I-League fixture at the Yuba Bharati Krirangan here on Wednesday.
Israil Gurung (26th) and Bikramjeet Singh (70th) scored for the Subhas Bhowmick side before their inspirational Brazilian medio Beto (85th) was sent off following his second booking but the damage was done for the local challengers.
United SC pulled one back through Bello Rasaq's 89th minute strike but could not match their opponents. The win put Churchill Brothers (18) at the second spot, two points behind leaders East Bengal but their position in the standings will depend on the outcome of Dempo (16) match being held in Goa.
It was a first loss for United SC under Dutchman coach Eelco Schattorie as the side sorely missed their Costa Rican former World Cupper Carlos Hernandez who was suspended on disciplinary grounds.
A lapse by Subrata Pal saw Gurung capitalise on a Balan cross to beat the United goalkeeper in the left to give Churchill a first-half lead. Having conceded an early goal, the pressure was clearly evident on United star forward Ranty Martins who did not get enough support from behind as the Goan defence was successful in thwarting the Nigerian's raids.
