New Delhi: Spanish giants Real Madrid beat Olympiakos 4-2 in a thrilling game at the Bernabeu in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Real got off to a flying start with skipper Raul putting it past the visitors' net in just the second minute. But Olympiakos equalised almost immediately Luciano Galletti scoring with a scorching left footer.
Julio Cesar then grabbed the lead for Olympiakos in the second half as he put it past the Madrid goalkeeper to make it 2-1.
The man for Real Madrid was Robinho; the Brazilian first equalised for Madrid in the 68th minute with a header and then made it two for the night to give his side a 3-2 lead.
He then set up this cross for Balboa who tucked in the fourth for Madrid in injury time and sealed the win.
Meanwhile, a resiliant Chelsea beat Schalke comfortably in their Champions League game at a packed Stamford Bridge.
The Blues got off to a perfect start when Frenchman Florent Malouda managed to put it through the goalkeeper's legs in the fourth minute.
Chelsea then kept the pressure on the Bundelsliga side but were unable to convert any further in the first half.
Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba found his own in the second half and immediately put his side ahead in the 47th minute. A Paolo Ferreira-Drogba combination gave thier new coach Avram Grant a reason to rejoice.
Last season's runners-up Liverpool's chances of reaching the last 16, however, were delt a severe blow when they lost to Besiktas in their Champions League match.
It was the Turkish side Besiktas who took the lead in the 13th minute; an own goal from Sami Hyypia started the Liverpool downslide. The hosts managed to keep the Reds at bay in the first half, but a dazzling solo effort by Bobo made it 2-0 in the 82nd minute.
Liverpool gave themselves hope three minutes later when Gerrard superbly headed home from 15 yards.
But they failed to find an equaliser, as this defeat now places Liverpool at the bottom of Group A.
AC Milan also got back to winning ways with a flattering 4-1 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in Champions League Group D on Wednesday.
