New Delhi: Liverpool came up trumps in their must-win game against Marseille in style on Tuesday.
Liverpool took the lead in the fourth minute of the game from captain Steven Gerrard who scored off a penalty.
Spanish international Fernando Torres scored a superb goal seven minutes later to take Liverpool 2-0 up, after which Dirk Kuyt pumped in the third goal early in the second half. Ryan Babel completed a 4-0 rout by scoring the last one for the night.
The Reds also became the first English side to beat Marseille at Velodrome in a European competition.
In another do-or-die fixture, Real Madrid defeated Lazio 3-1 at the Bernabeu, while Chelsea were held to a goalless draw by Valencia. But the Blues have already gone through to the knockout stage.
FC Porto, needing only a draw to go to the next stage, beat Besiktas 2-0, and Olympiakos pumped in three goals to win their game against Werder Bremen.
