Glasgow: Sunil Chhetri and Jeje Lalpekhlua have arrived in Glasgow to begin trials with Scottish Premier League champions Rangers.
The India strike duo shall train with the first-team squad starting Saturday and will attend the match against Kilmarnock on Sunday. They are also set to play in a friendly against Hamburg on Tuesday, according to sources, which is a part of their week-long trials.
Having got a green signal from the All India Football Federation (AIFF) to give India's upcoming friendly against Zambia a miss, the match against Hamburg shall also see some scouts from a couple of Portuguese clubs, namely Sporting Lisbon and Benfica, be around.
"They will have a look around Ibrox and Murray Park and will hopefully be here for a week. They have kindly agreed to come over and we will have a look at them,” manager Ally McCoist was quoted saying.
Chhetri, 27, plays for Mohun Bagan and has made 52 appearances for the Indian national team, scoring 24 goals. 20-year-old Jeje is with Pune and already has six goals for India in 10 international games.
Meanwhile, Chhetri, having learnt from his stint with Sporting Kansas where he didn’t feature for them in the MLS, stated that joining a club and not playing for them is one of the worst things to happen to a football player.
"But for me, it is purely football. No matter how or why I come over here, I just want to play. The worst thing is for a player to come to a club and not be able to play. It's good that even the gaffer gave an interview saying he just wants to see us as footballers," said Chhetri.
"I'm sure there is a little bit of marketing there, I'm not going to deny that. For me, and thankfully for the coach, he just wants to see us as footballers. My main focus is to come over here and show what I can bring to the table as a footballer."
