The fashion scene in 2023 was a delightful fusion of past and present, celebrating the timeless appeal of retro styles. The transition from the beloved pink to festive Cherry Red added a festive touch, embraced by both men and women in various fashion elements. Digital content creator Jhanvi Bhatia talks to us about the major fashion evolution that Bollywood saw in the last year.
From plaid on skirts and bows to everything pink, we had a roundup of everything in remembering fashion from the past this year! From Archie’s to Barbie’s, from textures and prints to colours, all the style elements had their turn in becoming trendy. Right from getting love from the boomers, nostalgia hitting the millennials and Gen Z being introduced to the trends from the 50s to the 70s, it was a different emotion for all the generations.
Getting deep into the trends, it started with remembering our love for maxi skirts in real life and even projecting tribute to Mr. Karl Lagerfield, a pioneer in contributing to fashion. This generation has always taken inspiration from previous years, moulded it into their version, and reinvented it in their style!
We had our love for the pink transition into the winter Christmas-y colours ~ Cherry Red! Men and women adorned this colour in their makeup, nail polishes, scarves, bows and whatnot!
With Zoya Akhtar releasing Archie’s, there was a splurge of brands collaborating with the movie in the field of makeup and clothing, and this got into the trend of wearing tights, stockings, headbands and even bold wing liners. Everyone who’d read Archies wanted to relive those years, and the ones who hadn’t wanted to experience it through their eyes. Bollywood movies are pretty influential in terms of fashion for the audience of India, and a great example of this was also the film Rocky and Rani kii Prem Kahani!
This was the movie where Alia’s ombré sarees came into the picture. It was again a time where GenZ took inspiration from the past—the iconic Chiffon sarees in Bollywood—and moulded them into ombré shades and reinvented them in the movie. A style that was loved for months and months, even during festivals like Diwali! Women rocked it, and the designer Manish Malhotra yet again proved himself in setting the trend!
Hence, from every kind of Barbie existing to every kind of Archie gang, there’s a place in fashion for all! As the year ends, it excites me as a creator to see what our style definition will be in 2024!
