Prithviraj Sukumaran Opens Up About His Break From Bollywood, Teases Bade Miyan Chote Miyan | Exclusive
Prithviraj Sukumaran spills the beans on his absence from Bollywood. He also lauds Ali Abbas Zafar and reveals why he's confident BMCM will work.

The teaser of Bade Miyan Chote Miyan was recently unveiled and created quite a chatter on social media. The action entertainer stars Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff in the lead with Prithviraj Sukumaran playing the antagonist. Interestingly, it marks the Malayalam star’s return to Bollywood after seven years, his last Hindi film being Naam Shabana (2017).

While not much is known about his character yet, Prithviraj, in an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, shed some light on the film. “It will surprise a lot of people because of its scale and plot. It’s a really exciting script. I don’t know how anyone could say no to the character I play in the film. It’s one of a kind. I’m really looking forward to its release,” he said. Lauding Ali Abbas Zafar, he added, “Ali is a fantastic filmmaker. I really hit it off with him and I understand how he visualises and perceives things.”

When asked about his absence from Hindi cinema, Prithviraj candidly shared, “The fact is that I didn’t find anything exciting. I, of course, read scripts and heard narrations. But I didn’t think anything was exciting enough to warrant me taking time off from Malayalam cinema and coming here and doing a film.”

However, the Salaar actor revealed that he wouldn’t want to take such long gaps between Hindi films anymore. In fact, he’s particularly keen on helming a comedy film in Bollywood soon. “I would love to do and direct more comic films. But it’s one of the toughest genres to write. Comedy on Instagram reels for 60 seconds is a lot easier to make than a genuinely organic comedy feature film that spans over two hours. I hope I find more scripts like Bro Daddy (2022). In fact, I would love to do a comic film in Hindi,” stated Prithviraj, who marked his Bollywood debut with Aiyyaa (2012).

And with pan-Indian films becoming the flavour of the season, does he intend on directing a multilingual Hindi film too? “The first thing to understand here is that you cannot make a pan-Indian film. The film becomes pan-Indian. You don’t set out thinking, ‘Let me make a pan-Indian film.’ This is a discussion I’ve had with multiple corporates across discussion tables where I’ve told them that we’re thinking wrong,” he explained.

He added, “When you look at all the pan-Indian successes, you’ll see that they didn’t become successful because of who’s in it. When someone asks me if a certain character can be played by someone from the Hindi film industry or Telugu cinema, they’re essentially doing this to understand that the film has relatability across languages because actors from various industries are going to be a part of it.”

On a related note, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan also stars Sonakshi Sinha, Manushi Chhillar and Alaya F. Shot across locations such as Mumbai, London, Abu Dhabi, Scotland and Jordan, it is being billed as a grand-scale actioner with Hollywood-style cinematic visuals. It is slated for a theatrical release on Eid 2024.
