'That's Why They Lost The Match:' Internet Reacts To Bangladesh Cricketer's Broken Bat

Bangladesh suffered a four-run defeat against South Africa at Nassau County in New York on Monday. Amid the intense on-field action, a bizarre incident, which took place during the penultimate over of the Bangladesh innings, has taken the Internet by storm. While facing the final ball of the 18th over, bowled by South Africa pacer Ottneil Baartman, Bangladesh’s Jaker Ali played a pull shot toward the midwicket region but he mistimed the stroke. Ali managed to run two but the error in timing resulted in his bat being busted. In a bid to check the condition of the willow, he even whacked it face-first onto the knee and this time the bat was broken totally.

Ahead of the final over, Jaker Ali signalled to his dressing room and wanted to get a new bat. The new blade, however, hardly made any difference as Bangladesh fell short by four runs.

The entire episode was shared by the official Instagram handle of the International Cricket Council (ICC). “Sometimes there’s no fixing a broken willow,” read the post.

Asking for the Bangladesh cricketer’s punishment, another social media user wrote, “This is an offence ICC should impose the fine on him.”

A person was in awe of former England skipper Nasser Hussain’s commentary.

A user felt that the Bangladesh cricketer “shouldn’t have thrown the bat.”

“It was already broken but the mistake is he threw it on the ground,” read a comment.
