As the Indian women’s team gear up for their opening game against New Zealand in the T20 World Cup 2024, the squad is certainly motivated to replicate Rohit Sharma and co’s efforts by winning the tournament to create history within Indian cricket.
India batter, Jemimah Rodrigues recalled what it was like seeing the men’s team take part in the final against South Africa in Barbados, and the feeling of of seeing the boys take home the title.
“I remember watching the men’s final. We had a Test match against South Africa, and on Day 3, we stayed up until 12 or 1:30 in the night watching the match. I remember that moment clearly. We’ve always dreamt of winning the World Cup, but seeing them win just before our World Cup made it feel so much more real,” Jemimah said to Star Sports.
The Women’s team will be motivated by seeing the Men’s team go all the way. Jemimah looked back at the moment within the India women’s camp where they all fell silent.
“That desire and passion to win was ignited when we saw Rohit Sharma and the team lifting the trophy. A few of us were in the room, and we’re usually a talkative bunch, especially me, but when that happened, we all fell silent,” she added.
As a result of the men’s team’s triumph, the women’s team also began dreaming of hopefully doing the same for women’s cricket. But at the moment, the side is all focused on the present and doing the best they can presently.
“I knew everyone was thinking, ‘When will our time come? How will it feel to see Harry Di lift the World Cup with us in the background?’ I don’t want to think too much about the result, honestly,” Jemimah shared.
“The dream is there, but we’re focusing more on the process and what we need to do. We’ll let God take care of the result,” Jemimah added.
The Indian women’s team will take on New Zealand to begin their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side have been slotted in Group A where they also have the likes of Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia as well in the group, proving to be an exciting round of fixtures.
It will be on the India women’s team to break through the shackles and go all the way just like how Rohit Sharma’s India men’s team were able to do in Barbados.
