Rinku Singh made a big name for himself during the 2023 season of the Indian Premier League. The left-handed batter finished as the leading run scorer for the Kolkata Knight Riders, and during one of the matches against the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad, he hammered five sixes in a row to win a match out of nowhere. After his super show in the IPL 2023, Rinku made his white-ball debut for India in August during the Ireland series and has so far played in two ODIs and 23 T20Is.
The 26-year-old is an integral part of the KKR set-up and is likely to be retained by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auctions. But if Kolkata decides to release him, then Rinku wants to play for Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the cash-rich league.
Rinku made this admission during a recent interview with Sports Today when asked about which team he would like to play for if KKR decides not to retain him. “RCB, because Virat Kohli is there,” said Rinku.
Rinku, who was one of the four reserve players for India in the T20 World Cup 2024, was recently ignored by the BCCI selectors for the Duleep Trophy 2024, which is set to start on September 5 in Andhra Pradesh. According to Rinku, he was not picked in any of the four squads announced by BCCI on August 14 because he hasn’t performed well in domestic cricket.
“Maine itna acha kara nahi hai. Zyada matches bhi nahi khele the Ranji Trophy ke, 2-3 matches he khele the aur acha kara bhi nahi tha, isliye select nahi hua. Agle matches honge toh, hopefully naam aa jaye mera.”
Rinku last played for India during the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka in July 2024, and during the third T20I, he picked up two wickets as well. According to him, everyone is now aware that he can contribute with his bowling as well.
“Sab ko pata chal gaya hai (about his bowling) kyuki last Sri Lanka wale match mein maine bowl daali thi aur 2 wickets bhi liye the toh sabko pata chal gaya hai ki mai bowl bhi daal skta hoon.”
