As the T20 World Cup arrived in the United States of America, the newly-constructed facility in Nassau County hogged the limelight. The facility, which will host the much-awaited India vs Pakistan game, was built in 100 days while its Australia-made drop-in pitches became the talk of the town.
As exciting as the makeshift venue looked, it has begun receiving criticism from the fans and experts, especially what panned out in Sri Lanka’s campaign opener against South Africa on Monday.
It was a nightmarish outing for the 2014 champions as they were bundled out for 77 which is now their lowest total in T20Is. Anrich Nortje returned magical figures of 4 for 7 while Kagiso Rabada and Keshav Maharaj scaled two wickets apiece. And for the Proteas, the chase of 78 wasn’t easy either. They huffed and puffed for 16.2 overs for a 6-wicket win.
The captains, Wanindu Hasaranga and Aiden Markram, criticized the pitch while the experts too were unpleased with it as they took to social media to express their disappointment.
Not an ideal pitch for t20 cricket.— Irfan Pathan (@IrfanPathan) June 3, 2024

This isn’t IPL, T20 in US is different ball game. The pitches have bounce and movement, this leg of T20 World Cup is not only about hitting sixes. India will need pace to win here. #T20WorldCup— Mohammad Kaif (@MohammadKaif) June 3, 2024
Lively pitch at New York. That’s the thing with the drop-in surfaces. Extra layer of grass to begin with. Takes time to settle down. Need cricket to be played on the square for it to become what they end up becoming—good pitches to bat. #T20WorldCup

Pitch of the 80s & batters of 2020s. Not a good union. #CricketInNY— Sanjay Manjrekar (@sanjaymanjrekar) June 3, 2024
Here’s what the captains said:
Aiden Markram: “It was a tough one from a batting point of view, we try as much as we can to take the pitch out of it, we can take some learnings from it and we are experienced. Lots of different conditions as we move around, fortunately, we have our next two here so we know what’s coming but it’s important to adapt as we go ahead.”
Wanindu Hasaranga: “To be honest this was a 120 wicket, especially with our bowlers. We went with our strength – our bowling, that’s why we batted first. We wanted to put a score and then defend. This is early in the tournament and we have three more games, we want to do much better, especially with our batting talent.”
