On leadership, MS Dhoni said that as a leader, it is important to earn the respect of others instead of demanding it and that his connection with CSK is more emotional than anything else.

After CSK’s final IPL 2024 game, everyone awaits any MS Dhoni update. Dhoni was last seen on the field storming off to the dressing room after RCB beat CSK to make the IPL 2024 playoff and then, a day later, was spotted at Ranchi. Photos of him on a bike later went viral, but the key update of whether he will come back for one more IPL season or call it quits, still eludes the fans.

However, amid the uncertainty over MS Dhoni’s future, a video of the great man has emerged in which he talks about why it will not be easy for him to part ways with CSK. In a public forum, when asked about leadership, Dhoni said that as a leader, it is important to earn the respect of others instead of demanding it and that his connection with CSK is more emotional than anything else.

As Dhoni himself puts it, “We Indians, yes, we are professionals, but our emotional connect is much more stronger." he said, adding, “I feel as an Indian, my strength is the emotional connect. Yes, we want to be professional and everything, but that emotional thing is my strength. So, my connection with CSK, it’s an emotional connect. You know, it’s not only like a player who comes, plays a couple of months and goes back home."

In the Dubai Eye 103.8 YT video, Dhoni is asked how he has applied his leadership skills in his business life. Dhoni said having the correct principles makes decision-making easy.

“Whether it is business or life, you know, you need to have the right principles, and you need to follow those paths because what happens is it makes decision-making easy. You know, you can’t always, you know, move front and back and, you know, take decisions. So, what is important is what you think is right in a certain way. You know, you keep moving ahead, and often that helps you decide the future course of action," said the 43-year-old.

Dhoni emphasised how adaptability plays a vital role within those defined plans and how earning the respect of people around you can motivate them to give 10 to 15% more.

“And as I said, adaptability is the key. You know, we all have our business plans, thinking about what is happening around us at this point. But in the next six months, there may be some new technology that comes in, and you quickly need to adapt. So, we all make plans, but once the first ball is bowled, after that, there’s no plan because everything depends on how it’s going.

So, adaptability becomes a key. One point that I missed initially when we’re talking about leaders is important thing is to you have to earn that respect of the people you are leading. You cannot command or demand respect. You need to earn it. I may be having a position in the institution. Yes, that position needs to be respected. But me, as an individual sitting on the chair, I need to earn that respect. I can’t be saying, okay, I’m sitting in this chair; you need to respect me. And I feel when you have the respect of the people around you, they give maybe ten or 15% more," he said.
