ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024: What India Need to Do to Book Semis Berth
India New Zealand and Pakistan have two points each with one win from two games but the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side have the poorest Net Run Rate of the three.

The Indian women’s cricket team have their work cut out after New Zealand’s 60-run loss to Australia in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024. With this result, Australia grabbed the top spot in Group A with two wins from as many as matches as India, along with New Zealand and Pakistan have two points each with one win from two games.

Opener Beth Mooney top-scored with a 32-ball 40 as Australia posted a challenging 148 for eight. Ellyse Perry chipped in with a 24-ball 30, after Alyssa Healy contributed 26 in 20 deliveries at the top of the order.

In reply, New Zealand were all out for 88 in 19.2 overs with Megan Schutt returning excellent figures of 3/3 in 3.2 overs. Annabel Sutherland (3/21) and Sophie Molineux (2/15) were the other major wicket-takers for Australia.

Harmanpreet Kaur and Co. are in a tight corner as it lags in net run rate in Group A of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 following a heavy loss to New Zealand in their first game.

India, who slumped to a big loss to the White Ferns in their first game of the tournament, got onto the points table with a win over Pakistan in the previous game. But the team took 18.5 overs to chase down only 106, the slow going thus not significantly reducing the deficit in the net run rate they copped after the first game.

With the group looking headed to a dramatic ending as three of the five teams are on two points apiece and the Indians will have to do a lot and without much delay to live up to their tag of pre-tournament favourite.

India are currently in fourth position in the five-team group, behind Pakistan and New Zealand.

Standings

India’s Remaining Matches

  • October 9 – India vs Sri Lanka
  • October 13 – India vs Australia

India will hope to beat Sri Lanka by a huge margin to better their Net Run Rate. It will all boil down to the last round of games in the group as India take on Australia, who are all but certain to qualify for the knockouts from the group.
