Following an exciting IPL season, fans will now shift their focus to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. The mega event will be hosted by the USA and the West Indies this year, starting June 2. It marks the ninth edition of the ICC tournament which came into existence in 2007 in parallel to the emergence of 20-over cricket.
Team India, under the captaincy of the legendary MS Dhoni, became the champions of the inaugural T20 World Cup edition in South Africa. Following that, five other nations – Pakistan, England, West Indies, Sri Lanka, and Australia – have had the privilege of lifting the coveted trophy. As we set for another edition of the T20 World Cup, let’s take a look at the past winners of the multi-nation tournament.
T20 World Cup 2007– India
The Indian side suffered a single defeat in the group stage before meeting Australia in the semi-final. The Men in Blue comfortably defended an 189-run target in the knockout game, restricting Australia to 173. In the final, the MS Dhoni-led India were up against arch-rivals Pakistan and it turned out to be a nail-biting clash in Johannesburg.
Pakistan looked promising to chase down 158 runs. They needed 13 runs in the final over with one wicket in hand when Dhoni played a masterstroke, bringing Yoginder Sharma into the attack. The bowler conceded 8 runs in the first two balls before trapping Misbah ul Haq with a slower delivery. The Pakistani batter attempted a scoop over the short-fine leg but ended up falling victim to Sreesanth, who completed a brilliant catch to seal the deal.
T20 World Cup 2009– Pakistan
The second T20 World Cup also came to Asia with Pakistan finishing at the top of the podium. Led by Younis Khan, Pakistan got past the league stage with ease. They squared off against South Africa in the semi-final and notched a seven-run victory. Pakistan had to overcome Sri Lanka in the final at Lord’s. It turned out a low-scoring affair after the Islanders managed only 138 runs in the first innings. Pakistan were not troubled much during the chase and won the title clash by eight wickets.
T20 World Cup 2010– England
An epic rivalry unfolded in the final of the 2009 T20 World Cup, with England and Australia vying for glory. England, who looked quite pale in the group stage, beat Sri Lanka in the semi-final to reach the finale. They continued their dominance in the ultimate game and forced Australia to wrap up at 147. England chased down the small target in 17 overs to secure their maiden T20 World Cup.
T20 World Cup 2012– West Indies
The West Indies were the champions of the third T20 World Cup edition, which was hosted in Sri Lanka. The Caribbean brigade registered a dominant 74-run win over Australia in the semi-final to make their way into the summit clash. They faced off against hosts Sri Lanka in the final and won the match by 36 runs to take home the title.
T20 World Cup 2014– Sri Lanka
After losing the T20 World Cup final on home soil, Sri Lanka could turn the tables in the following edition in Bangladesh. This time, the Islanders got the better of defending champions West Indies in a rain-affected semi-final. Sri Lanka put up an exceptional bowling performance in the final and defeated India by six wickets to claim the first T20 World Cup title.
T20 World Cup 2016– West Indies
The West Indies became the first team to win two T20 World Cups by triumphing in the 2016 campaign. They edged past hosts India in a high-scoring semi-final on the back of an enthralling batting performance. The West Indies continued the momentum in the final where they beat England by four wickets to clinch the title.
T20 World Cup 2021– Australia
After a long hiatus of five years, the T20 World Cup made a return in 2021. Pakistan, who dominated the Super-12 stage, ultimately lost the semi-final to the eventual champions Australia. Under the leadership of Aaron Finch, the Aussies took on New Zealand in the final and chased down a 174-run target in the 19th over to engrave their name on the T20 World Cup trophy for the first and only time in history.
T20 World Cup 2022– England
India demonstrated their superiority in the 2022 T20 World Cup. Their journey, however, ended in the semi-final where they lost to England. The Three Lions clashed against Pakistan in the final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. It turned out to be a one-sided game after Pakistan produced only 137 runs in the first innings. Powered by Ben Stokes’ half-century, England won the mega clash by five wickets to secure their second title.
