Farmers across India have reason to rejoice as the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) in Pusa offers a golden opportunity to boost crop yields. Renowned for its cutting-edge research and development in agriculture, the institute provides access to high-yielding seeds spanning various crops such as rice, pigeon peas and an array of vegetables tailored to diverse climatic conditions.
Dr. Gyanendra Singh, Principal Scientist at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and head of the Seed Production Unit, underscores the significance of this initiative. While traditional methods of seed distribution at agricultural fairs have been disrupted due to the pandemic, farmers can directly procure seeds from the institute.
A wide assortment of seeds, encompassing multiple rice varieties, pigeon peas, mung beans and assorted vegetables, are currently available. The demand for these seeds, particularly in states like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and Punjab, is substantial, presenting an excellent opportunity for farmers in these regions to access high-quality seeds conveniently.
Operational from 9 AM to 5:30 PM, the seed distribution facility ensures farmers have ample time to obtain seeds. Dr. Singh explains the meticulous process behind seed selection and distribution. Scientists meticulously identify crop varieties suitable for specific regions and collaborate with farmers for seed production. Farmers within a 100-120 km radius of the IARI centre are preferred to minimise transportation costs.
Moreover, farmers have the option to participate in seed production collaboratively, alleviating the financial burden associated with seed delivery. This collaborative approach not only benefits farmers economically but also fosters knowledge exchange and skill enhancement.
Established in 1911 as the Imperial Institute of Agricultural Research in Pusa, Bihar, IARI, also known as the Pusa Institute, stands as India’s premier institution for agricultural research, education and extension services.
