Women’s empowerment plays an important role in the development of any country. A lot of discussions and debates are being held to ensure that women can lead their lives with dignity without facing any kind of discrimination. Amid this, a member of the National Commission for Women (NCW), Kushboo Sundar spoke about the need for women’s empowerment and the influence of movies on the youth.

Recently, Kushboo Sundar, a pan- Indian actress was present at a summit where she shared her opinion about Ranbir Kapoor’s movie Animal. At the summit regarding “Female Protagonist: The New Hero”, Kushboo spoke about witnessing her mother getting abused during her childhood. The actress decided to not be “a helpless woman” after seeing the way her father treated her mother. Her mother wanted her to not become like her and the actress had the support of male colleagues in her life. At the same event, she spoke about the role of women in movies and their representation.

Kushboo Sundar expressed surprise about the success of Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal starring Ranbir Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Rashmika Mandanna and Anil Kapoor in the lead. She shared, “It is necessary to understand the mentality of those who watch movies like Animal.” She pointed out that it is the thinking pattern of the audience that should change. She shared an instance where her daughter snuck out to see the Animal movie without her permission. When she returned home, she told her mother to not watch it.

The actress further commented that the youth is watching movies like Animal and Kabir Singh again and again and liking these movies and this mentality should change. She questioned the mentality of those watching these kinds of movies and asked, “Where are we going by making movies like this?”

At a time when everyone is discussing and fighting for equal rights and respect, the actress feels that Animal “belittled women”. However, she said that she does not “blame the director” because it is the audience who is watching these movies and hence they make such movies. She concluded that misogyny is not heroism and that people should stop watching such movies.
