To boost the Southern Railway, the authorities have been pushing the limits, and started investing more efforts to start operations on some projects. As per the details shared by the TOI, SR general manager R N Singh has confirmed that the concerned department will complete infrastructure work in the coming months.
While attending the 75th Republic celebration, and unfurling the country’s National Flag, Singh said Chennai Egmore-Beach’s fourth line is expected to be finished in March. It also has been reported that double lines from Nagercoil Town to Kanyakumari, Aralvaimoli –Nagercoil Jn, and Tirunelveli- Melapalayam, have reached their final stage, and are expected to be complete by the end of this month.

TOI has also quoted him, where he said, “The section speed of the Arakkonam-Jolarpet section has been raised from 110 to 130 kmph, and the sectional speed of eight more sections has been increased to 110 kmph.” In addition, he said, “We have planned 12 more sections for an increased speed of 110 kmph, totaling 374 km.”
Project to Complete in March
Singh also shared the details about the Jokatte–Thokur line doubling work, saying it will reach the final stage or be completed in March. As far as the Chinnasalem-Kallakurichi and Karaikal-Peralam’s new lines are concerned, it will take a few months more to complete. The deadly for the same has been given till June 2024.
Southern Railway’s Electrified Route
Meanwhile, the Southern Railway’s 216 route km (RKM) was electrified last year, transforming most of the route. Amid this, the railway has witnessed a total of 4,608 electrified rkm by the end of 2023.
