New Delhi: ‘La meccanica delle emozioni’, which means, ‘the mechanics of emotion’ is the phrase Alfa Romeo have chosen to promote their latest contribution to the world of automobiles, the Giulia.
It was unveiled on the 105th anniversary of the founding of ALFA (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili) at the Alfa Romeo Museum in Arese, Italy.
This new sports saloon holds a 3.0-litre V6 bi-turbo engine that produces 510PS at the rear wheels and has claimed 0 to 100 time of just 3.9 seconds.
It also has an electronically controlled cylinder deactivation for better fuel efficiency. The engine is made entirely of lightweight aluminium and is arranged between the axles to ensure a 50-50 weight distribution.
The weight reduction measures don’t stop there as carbon-fibre is the material of choice for the propeller shaft, bonnet, roof and seat frames while aluminium is used for the suspension, wings and doors. All this has given the Giulia an astounding power-to-weight ratio.
Alfa seem to have given a lot of importance to the way this car handles around a bend with all the technology being used in this car. In the suspension department, they’ve fitted an Alfalink multilink suspension in the front and double wishbone set up in the rear, along with electronically-controlled adaptive dampers.
In the steering department, they have exclusively developed a semi-virtual steering axis to maximise steering accuracy. When it comes to power delivery, the Giulia uses a double-clutch torque vectoring system that allows the rear differential to control the amount of torque being delivered to each wheel individually.
This improves traction without much interference from a stability control system. To manage downforce, the car uses an active aero splitter to improve cornering grip at high speeds. This Alfa Romeo uses carbon ceramic discs that are controlled by an integrated braking system.
All these systems are adjusted by selecting one of the four driving modes available, namely Dynamic, Natural, Advanced Efficient and Racing mode.
