The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has submitted a proposal to the government regarding the Agra Gwalior Greenfield Expressway marking a significant development for the state’s infrastructure.
This initiative aims to connect the city of Agra with Gwalior, reducing travel time and fostering better connectivity between the two cities.
According to a report by Hindustan Times, Agra is already well-connected with two expressways, namely the Agra Lucknow Expressway and the Yamuna Expressway. The proposed Agra Gwalior Greenfield Expressway is set to further enhance transportation links, making travel between Agra and Gwalior more efficient.
The NHAI has issued a notice under section 3A for the acquisition of 117.83 hectares of land from 15 villages across three tehsils – Tehsil Sadar, Fatehabad and Kheragarh in the Agra district. This land acquisition is a crucial step in the development of the expressway, and the NHAI has forwarded the proposal to the state government for approval.
The spokesperson for the state government was quoted by Hindustan Times highlighting that the Agra Gwalior Greenfield Expressway would significantly reduce travel time between the two cities. At present, the journey takes two and a half hours to cover a distance of 121 kilometres. With the proposed Greenfield Expressway in place, this travel time is expected to be cut down to just one hour. The expressway will span 88.40 kilometres and feature six lanes.
The expressway will commence at the inner ring road in Devri village and conclude at Susera village in Gwalior. To ensure safety and prevent the entry of stray animals, the expressway will be constructed at a height, featuring 2 to 3 meters high walls on its sides.
The estimated cost for the Agra Gwalior Greenfield Expressway is 2497.84 crores, with each kilometre costing approximately 25.80 crores. Notably, the stretch between Agra and Dholpur is anticipated to cost 972 crores.
The spokesperson also emphasised the strategic connectivity advantages the expressway would offer, stating, “Those travelling on the Yamuna Expressway, National Highway –19, and Lucknow Expressway can join the Agra Gwalior Greenfield Expressway at the inner ring road for reaching Gwalior. Vehicles coming through the new south bypass at Agra can also join the Agra Gwalior Greenfield Expressway, which will save fuel and time.”
