Cricket World Cup: Gujarat BJP Distributes Free Tickets to Women for Opening Match | Here's Why
BJP vice-president of Bodakdev area said the idea to bring women to the stadium in large numbers was inspired by the women’s reservation Bill passed in the Parliament last month

Members of Gujarat BJP offered free tickets to around 30,000-40,000 women across Ahmedabad for the opening match of the Cricket World Cup 2023 between defending champions England and New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Thursday.

According to an Indian Express report, the party’s local leaders are distributing free tickets and coupons for complimentary food and tea in order to mobilise women to pack the stands.

BJP vice-president of Bodakdev area said the idea to bring women to the stadium in large numbers was inspired by the women’s reservation Bill passed in the Parliament last month.

“Around 30,000 to 40,000 women from Ahmedabad will be watching the game in the stadium. Our volunteers have been asked to send the names and tickets were handed to them today. Tickets upar se aaya hai (We got these tickets from the top). Kya hai na, 33 per cent women reservation Bill bhi pass hua hai (See, even the 33 per cent women’s reservation Bill has been passed). These women will be reaching the stadium on their own and will be given tea and food coupons,” Wadhawan was quoted by Indian Express as saying.

The efforts began taking shape a couple of days ago with BJP ward members asking their workers to prepare a list the names of women from societies, apartments and their booth areas interested in watching the World Cup game.

Meanwhile, Gujarat BJP spokesperson Yamal Vyas, on being asked if the party has put in extra efforts to mobilise women spectators for the Cricket World Cup 2023 opening match, said, “We have not made any effort at the party level for anything like that. If they (women) go in large numbers, fine. But the party is not making any special effort for that.”

The tickets for the opening match between England and New Zealand in the Narendra Modi stadium, which has a capacity of more than 1.3 lakh, have not been not sold out.
