Her friends from early days recall her as tall and fashion conscious, who only spoke of her ambition to serve as the first woman Prime Minister of the country.As Theresa May entered politics and rose in West Minister she was tagged “Iron Lady” due to similarities with Margaret Thatcher, Britain's first woman PM.
May is UK's second longest serving Home Secretary in the past 100 years, known for her strong Tory values and is expected to unflinchingly follow through on Britain's vote to exit the European Union.
Here are five things, collated from British media, that you should know about her.
1. Her taste in footwear has always kept photographers interested. May is judged not only for her political ambition, but also for her fashion sense. British tabloids talked her leopard-print kitten heels. Ever since her name came up there was a spike in Google searches for 'Theresa May shoes' and 'Theresa May fashion'.
2. She is the vicar's daughter who drinks Earl Grey tea and goes for long walks along the countryside. She has a collection of 100 cookbooks. Yotam Ottolenghi, whose recipes include Middle eastern flavours, is her favourite. He is the man who took pomegranate molasses from Iranian grocers to the trolleys of European middle classes.
3. She was introduced to her husband Philip John May by Benazir Bhutto. He will be Britain’s new “first gentleman”. The pair met at a Conservative Party disco while they were studying at Oxford University. They quickly bonded over a shared fondness of cricket. He was two years her junior and the toast of the debating chamber. They were married on September 6, 1980.
4. She was appointed Home Secretary in May 2010 and has been the second longest in that office over the past 100 years. Her single-mindedness helped drive through the most far-reaching changes to policing in a generation, with the replacement of police authorities by 41 police and crime commissioners.
5. She is the first Prime Minister after Ted Heath who does not have children. She has been married for over 35 years and does not believing in sharing details of her personal life. Just a year after she got married, her father The Rev. Hubert Brasier, was vicar, died in a car crash. A few months later, her mother, Zaidee, died. Her mother had multiple sclerosis. May was 25 at the time.
One of her most-remembered quotes: “There is always a seat out there with your name on it.” We now know the seat which has her name on it.
